Technofabric: Custom production of Kevlar fabrics

Kevlar fabrics for bulletproof vests

Kevlar is a high-strength synthetic fiber produced by DuPont. It is used in many fields, including the production of bulletproof fabrics.

The production of bulletproof fabrics using Kevlar begins with the synthesis of Kevlar polymer. The polymer is produced through a chemical reaction between 1,4-phenylenediamine acid and terephthalic chloride. This chemical reaction forms a Kevlar polymer solution that is then spun through a process known as dry spinning.

During dry spinning, the Kevlar polymer is melted and pushed through a narrow, thin slot called the "spinning slot." The spinning slot is positioned above a rotating drum that spins at high speed. The centrifugal force of the drum elongates and aligns the Kevlar fibers as they solidify into thin threads.

The Kevlar threads are then woven together to form a fabric. The fabric is then heat-treated to increase dimensional stability and improve mechanical properties. Additionally, the fabric can be layered with other materials such as high-density polyethylene or ceramic to increase its ability to resist bullets.

The kevlar fabric is cut and sewn into bulletproof clothing. These bulletproof fabrics can be used in a variety of applications, including bulletproof jackets, helmets, shields, and more.

Kevlar fabrics for bulletproof vests and applications have the following characteristics

  • High tensile strength, wear and tear resistance
  • Good toughness and flexibility
  • Low density and weight
  • Heat and fire resistance
  • Resistance to chemical and biological agents

Kevlar applications are diverse and involve both military and civilian sectors. Some examples are:

  • Bulletproof vests, helmets, and shields
  • Fire-resistant suits and gloves
  • Cables, ropes, and parachutes
  • Reinforcements for tires, brakes, and helmets
  • Fabrics for sportswear and technical clothing
