ARAMID FIBER

TECHNOFABRIC: PRODUCTION AND SALE OF ARAMID FIBRE FABRICS.

Aramid fiber forms part of Technofabric’s core business, as a globally-recognised company in terms of product quality and finishing activities designed and developed in-house.
This highly-performing fabric is obtained thanks to an intensive Research and Development process, accompanied by a complete production cycle, from the yarn to the finished fabric.

Aramid fibre can be used for applications in various sectors, thanks to its characteristics of resistance and toughness.

Here is a small guide to learn about Aramid fabrics.

THE MEANING OF ARAMIDIC

What are Aramid fibres? Aramids are fibers obtained by processing aromatic polyamides, from which derives their name (ARomatic polyAMIDes).

Although closely related to Nylon (aliphatic polyamides), the replacement of the aliphatic carbon chain with aromatic groups generates notable changes in the characteristics of the fibres.

WHAT ARE THE CHARACTERISTICS OF ARAMID FIBERS?

The properties of Aramid are much more similar to those of inorganic materials than to those of other textile fibres. The breaking load, evaluated as force per cross-section unit, is of the same order of magnitude as those of steel and glass. If evaluated in terms of toughness (where the advantage constituted by the low specific weight enters into the calculation), the resistance of Aramid becomes exceptional. What’s more, Aramid fibers are resistant to traction, heat, acids, alkalis, solvents and humidity.

In detail, the characteristics of Aramid are:

  • Moisture Regain (%): 2.5
  • Wet Strength (% dry): ≥ 90
  • Heat Resistance: Good up to 250° C.
  • Melting Point: Decomposes above 500° C.
  • Acid Resistance: Excellent under normal conditions of use. Soluble in boiling concentrated sulphuric acid.
  • Alkali Resistance: Resistant.
  • Solvent Resistance: Resistant to most solvents. It dissolves in boiling concentrated sulphuric acid and in mixtures of solvents based on alkaline amides and chlorides.
  • Combustion: It does not burn or melt.

NOMEX® AND KEVLAR: REVOLUTIONARY FABRICS.

The first Aramid Nomex® Kevlar® fibres were invented by researchers at DuPont, a company that has been helping to solve some of humanity’s greatest challenges for more than 200 years through innovative products, materials and services.

The first Aramid fiber to be developed was given the name of Nomex®. Widely used in the production of flame-retardant clothing and the like, it is characterised by a medium level of toughness but is not flammable.

More recently, DuPont has created a new para-aramid fibre, called Kevlar®. Yellow in colour, it is utilised for cut-proof, bulletproof and industrial clothing, thanks to its specific tensile strength.

At the same time, DuPont’s competitor Teijin Aramid has introduced to the market the para-aramid fibres of the yellow-hued Technora and Twaron, with its characteristic black tone.

Technofabric produces a wide range of raw or dyed fabrics in Meta-Aramid fibre (Nomex®) and in para-aramid (Kevlar®., Twaron and Technora), with multiple fields of application.

Para-aramid fabrics

Aramid fiber fabrics with multi-filament or discontinuous fibre combine the qualities of extreme strength with the characteristics of very low weight. Indeed, they are more resistant than steel under equal load. It is available in the normal and antistatic versions.
