THE MEANING OF POLYESTER

Polyester is a synthetic polymer derived from the polycondensation of a carboxylic acid and an alcohol. It is the most common name for Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET).
Its properties give polyester products qualities such as crease resistance, wear resistance and dimensional stability. Even after many washes, polyester fiber do not require ironing and easily withstand dyeing processes.
Polyester fibre are waterproof and resistant to dirt, thanks to their low coefficient of liquid absorption.
Polyester is often used in combination with other fibres. To give its surface further mechanical characteristics, it can also be subjected to specific treatments. Besides the world of clothing, it finds application in many sectors.


CHARACTERISTICS OF POLYESTER

The qualities of Polyester have contributed to its broad use in various fields. In addition to high stability, Polyester has the following characteristics:


  • Immersion in water: Polyester loses some points of tenacity when wet but regains its original characteristics after drying.
  • Moisture: The standard regain of moisture for polyester is 0.5%.
  • Boiling Water: Polyester shrinks and slightly loses strength due to hydrolysis – this tendency can be more pronounced in the presence of steam and even greater with high-pressure steam.
  • Heat Good resistance to dry heat up to 180° (except upon prolonged exposure).
  • Melting Point: Over 250° C.
  • Flame: Subjected to flame, polyester tends to melt before burning. Burns with smoky flames.
  • Acid Resistance: Good resistance to acids but disintegrates upon heating in concentrated mineral acids.
  • Alkali Resistance: Generally good but at room temperature, polyester is subject to slow hydrolysis, which is accelerated at higher temperatures. Resistance to amines is not very good.
  • Solvents: Polyester is resistant to standard hydrocarbon solvents, aromatics and chlorinated compounds. It is soluble in phenols and other solvents at their boiling point, including cyclohexanone, benzyl alcohol, nitrobenzene and dimethyl phthalate. Polyester dissolves in boiling concentrated alkali and boiling ethylene glycol.
  • • Polyester is not susceptible to microbiological attack.

POLYESTER FIBRE

Woven polyester combines the strength and elongation characteristics of Nylon with the modulus characteristics of rayon. This combination of properties renders fabrics suitable for a variety of applications.
However, woven polyester can have some problems. The first concerns adhesion. Due to its relative chemical inertness, it is much more difficult to achieve satisfactory degrees of attack with polyester than with nylon and rayon. To resolve this issue, polyester yarns can be pre-treated with epoxy derivatives. Epoxide is applied in solution or in aqueous emulsion towards the end of the process. The fabric is then subjected to heat treatment to modify the surface of the fibre and RFL treatments to obtain sufficient adhesion. Polyester fibre treated in this way are referred to as being pre-treated, pre-activated, primed or rubber-receptive.
The second problem concerns heat shrinkage which is higher than that of nylon. In the design phase, it is necessary to evaluate the characteristics of the fibre in terms of shrinkage/modulus, as well as the choice of the degree of twisting of the yarn to determine the level of resistance to abrasion and fatigue. It is also possible to use textured yarns, being yarns which – thanks to thermo-mechanical treatments – take on characteristics of greater volume and elasticity, so as to achieve polyester fiber with particular mechanical characteristics.
Based on customer specifications, our company produces a wide range of raw or dyed fabrics in polyester or in combination with other fibres, such as polyester and nylon. All fabrics – thanks to an exclusive technology developed within the company – can be subjected to a thermal stabilisation and stretching treatment to obtain maximum dimensional stability and minimum longitudinal elongation (known as crimp).
Polyester fibre can also be subjected to the following treatments:

  • • Polyurethane treatment
  • • Treatment with water- and oil-repellent substances for impregnation or coating
  • • Treatment with RFL (Resorcinol-Formaldehyde-Latex) for impregnation or coating (single and double-face) to facilitate adhesion
  • • Anti-mould treatment
  • • UV protection
