Nylon fabrics for sailing in the nautical sector
Technofabric: Custom production of Nylon fabrics

Nylon is a synthetic fiber consisting of polyamides, macromolecules characterised by the CO-NH amide group. Nylon is made in several variations: PA 6,6 (polyamide) is made from hexamethylenediamine, while PA 6 is made from caprolactam.
Nylon is produced through a polymerization process, in which monomers join to form long molecular chains. The process can be of two types: staged or ring-opening. In the first case, it starts with two different monomers, one with an acid group and the other with an amine group, reacting with each other to form the amide bond and releasing a water molecule. This type of polymerization produces nylon 6,6 and other nylons with even numbers. In the second case, we start with a single cyclic monomer, which opens and polymerizes to form the amide bond without releasing water. This type of polymerization produces nylon 6 and other nylons with odd numbers.
Nylon is a synthetic fiber for the industrial market that has several advantageous characteristics, including: wear, tensile, chemical, and water resistance; lightweight and water resistance; elasticity and creasability; and ease of maintenance. These characteristics make it suitable for various types of garments and industrial and technical applications.
Some technical characteristics of Nylon fabrics for sailing in the nautical sector are:
This synthetic fiber has very high wear, tensile, chemical and water resistance. It is also lightweight, elastic, creaseable and easy to maintain.
Nylon has a melting point of about 220°C and a use temperature of -40°C to +100°C. It has high linear thermal expansion and thermal shrinkage due to heating.
This fabric has good resistance to alkalis, but is sensitive to acids and moisture, as it is hygroscopic. It is soluble in phenols, boiling acetic acid and formic acid.
This fabric has a dielectric constant of 3.5 and a dissipation factor of 0.023 at 1 Mhz. It has a dielectric strength of 100 KV/mm and a volume resistivity of 10^15 Ω-cm.
These characteristics make nylon suitable for making sails that need to be strong, lightweight, practical, and durable. Nylon is mainly used for spinnakers, the sails that are used in carrying swells to increase sail area and boat speed. Nylon spinnakers replace those made of silk or cotton, which were heavier and less durable.
Technofabric S.p.A. is a textile company specialized in the production of a wide range of fabrics for industrial and technical applications. Our strength is vertical integration, which means that we have control over the entire production process, from yarn production to the creation of finished fabrics. This allows us to maintain high quality standards and provide customized solutions to our customers.
Technofabric works with various types of yarn, including aramid, nylon, high tenacity polyester, carbon, and cotton. Each type of yarn has its own unique properties and applications, and Technofabric exploits these materials to create fabrics with specific characteristics and performance. Technofabric's expertise lies in turning ideas into functional, high-performance fabrics. We have the ability to develop tailor-made fabrics to meet customers' particular needs, whether it be durability, strength, flexibility or otherwise.
In addition to their technical capabilities, Technofabric prioritises the value it provides the customer. We are committed to understanding their needs and goals, and then creating fabrics that not only meet those requirements but also exceed expectations in terms of quality, performance, and reliability.
