Nomex fabrics for flame resistant conveyor belts

Technofabric: Custom production of Nomex fabrics

Nomex fabrics for flame resistant conveyor belts

Nomex fabric is a special material made of aramid fibers, which are a kind of synthetic polymer that DuPont created in the 1960s. Nomex fabric has the outstanding feature of being able to resist high temperatures and flames, without melting, dripping or igniting in the air. This makes Nomex fabric appropriate for making protective clothing for various sectors that face thermal hazards, such as firefighters, industrial workers, military aviators, motosport pilots, hospital gowns, and others. Nomex fabric also contributes to reducing environmental pollution, as it can filter out harmful exhaust gases in different industrial plants that deal with hot processes, such as asphalt, cement, steel smelting, and nonferrous metal production. Nomex fabric has a flexible and elastic structure, which gives it a similar feel to natural fabrics. Nomex fabric comes in different forms, such as paper, felt, woven, and fiber.

The industrial processing of Nomex fabric requires several steps, depending on the form and the end use of the product. For instance, to produce Nomex paper, the fibers are first dissolved in a solvent and then extruded into a thin film. The film is then dried and calendered to achieve the desired thickness and smoothness. The paper can then be cut into sheets or rolls for further applications. To produce Nomex felt, the fibers are first carded and cross-lapped to form a web. The web is then needled to interlock the fibers and increase the density. The felt can then be treated with various finishes to enhance its properties. To produce Nomex woven fabric, the fibers are first spun into yarns and then woven into different patterns and textures. The woven fabric can then be dyed, printed or embroidered with logos and symbols. To produce Nomex fiber, the fibers are first cut into short lengths and then crimped to increase their bulkiness. The fiber can then be used for filling or blending with other fibers.

The main characteristics of Nomex fabrics for flame resistant conveyor belts are:

Nomex conveyor belts are made from a special yarn that resists heat and flame. This makes them suitable for industries that use very hot machinery, such as calenders, mangers, ovens or dryers. Nomex fabric has several properties, including the fact that it does not ignite or melt like other materials, insulates well from heat, and does not wear out easily. Nomex is also lighter than para-aramids, but less durable. In addition, nomex tolerates weak alkalis, but not strong ones.

In addition to conveyor belts, nomex is also used for other applications that require protection from heat and flame, such as interior linings for airplanes and spacecraft, car seats and seat belts, electrical cables and conduits, protective suits and chemical filters, and fireproof clothing.

Technofabric produces nomex fabrics by following several stages:

  • Development: we design and manufacture technical fabrics in meta-aramid fiber (nomex or equivalent) to customer specifications, according to different needs and applications.
  • Weaving: we have modern and versatile machinery for weaving nomex yarns, both raw and dyed, with different structures and weights.
  • Finishing: we carry out specific surface treatments and finishing on nomex fabrics, such as resin coating, silicone coating, fluorocarbon coating, calendering, thermofixing and digital printing.
  • Quality control: we subject all nomex fabrics to rigorous quality control, both during and after production, to ensure compliance with regulations and customer expectations.

Nomex is a special fabric that resists heat and flames without melting, dripping or burning in the air. It is used to create protective clothing for various industries, such as racing, firefighters, military, industrial workers and others. Nomex is also used for industrial applications such as filters, conveyor belts, rubber membranes, thermal blankets, and loudspeakers. Nomex has characteristics similar to natural fabrics, such as low stiffness, high stretchability, low shrinkability, and the ability to be dyed. Nomex is produced and sold in different forms, such as paper, felt, fabric, and fiber.
